NAME: Esperanza Torres Carranza (she’s used to ditching the second last name to fit US naming conventions.)
NICKNAMES: Espe by friends; Pera by her parents
AGE/DOB: 15; May 23rd, 1999
BLOOD STATUS: Pureblood
GENDER/PRONOUNS: Female; she/her
SEXUALITY: She knows she likes girls, but that’s about it.
HOMETOWN: Palizada, Campeche, México
CONCEPT:Flighty oddball enjoys writing poems, making friends, and barrelling towards self destruction.
PHYSICAL
APPEARANCE: She values being comfortable a lot more than being fashionable, so expect to see her walk out a complete disaster most days. She likes looking cute, though, so when she puts actual effort into dressing up she’ll usually aim for a pastel and fluffy look. In the cold winter, or when she’s just not feeling it, she might ditch the uniform skirt and wear the pants instead.
HEIGHT: 167 cm
PB: Jessica Alba
PERSONALITY
LIKES: Sunlight, long and nice quills, writing, making friends, soft clothes, Grace, her family, Sole’s cooking, card games, new books, seafood, marquesitas, learning new spells.
DISLIKES: Spilling ink, milk, “that’s not real poetry!”, spicy food, short skirts, quills that don’t write like she wants them to, that one feeling of regret when you say something that hurts someone, chilling cold, forgetting things, Mondays, feeling lonely, spacing out, flying.
PERSONALITY:
The first thing you might notice about Esperanza is that she doesn't seem to be... quite there. She's constantly zoning off thinking about how spells work or a new poem idea or just how nice the sky looks today. Some people might misinterpret this as her being a stuck-up Pureblood who doesn't care about anyone else, but the truth is she just doesn't notice she's doing it.
Once you get her back from her daydreams, you'll find yourself talking to a very cheery girl, who will probably be overjoyed if you choose to talk to her before she does. If that's not the case, and it's her who approaches you, you might be faced with a quite uncomfortable-looking girl. It's not that she doesn't want to talk to you- she's just trying very hard to be nice enough to want to keep talking to.
Because she's not necessarily pleasant to talk to when you get to know her; she can be surprisingly insensitive at times, saying exactly what she thinks even when uncalled for, which she almost always regrets when she notices she's hurt someone. She just doesn't quite think through things before she says them.
Aside from that, she's a perfectly good friend, loyal to a fault and loving from the bottom of her heart. She'll be there for you on bad days (as long as you don't mind her telling it like she sees it) and a ray of sunshine in brighter ones. She's also pretty good at understanding and explaining how spells work, so if you're not doing great in class she'll be there to lend you a hand.
She also, however, has the terrible habit of never considering the consequences of her actions in general, which often leads to her finding no faults in terrible ideas and going along with them, or even worse, coming up with them herself. She's gotten herself more than one detention back at Coyopamienzo for helping her cousin release all the Quidditch balls for no good reason, or because she thought scuba diving was a perfectly fine way to find out what happens during sorting. Whether this is a detriment or a quality depends on where you stand on the rules vs. fun argument.
Her biggest dream is for her poetry to be good enough to show to the world; she doesn't think she's anywhere near that yet, so she only shows her writing to people she trusts to judge her fairly.
SKILLS
LANGUAGES SPOKEN: Spanish and English; she’s fluent in both. She first started studying English outside of class after becoming pen pals with a young wizard from the US when she was 7; she then proceeded to devour books and poetry in english until she had a much better grasp on it than anyone in her class. (She has a bit of an accent, though.)
SKILLS:
Poetry: Her biggest passion, Espe usually churns out poems at an unusual speed (when she’s not facing writer’s block). They’re not extraordinary, but they’re creative and some are experimental, charmed words weaving a story on paper, or glittering as the reader’s eyes reach them. She doesn’t think they’re very good, but she shares them only with her close friends and family.
Spellcasting: She loves learning new spells of all kinds, especially charms, and she considers them to be a form of art on its own right. She’s no prodigy at it or anything, and she’s not necessarily any better at it than the rest of her class, but it does mean she’s more likely to pay attention and practice hard for classes involving spells.
Zoology trivia: for both normal and magical creatures. She has basically no practical knowledge on this front, but Dayana’s obsession with dragons and other cool animals has rubbed off on her enough she might spout some random fun fact she remembers.
HISTORY
FAMILY MEMBERS:
Augusto Torres Navarrete- Espe’s dad, a level-headed man who enjoys spending time with his family. He works in the Government, the office in charge of registering newly created charms in the Secretariat of Magic to be exact, and spends a lot of time at work, but he loves his wife and daughter and organizes days out with them whenever he can.
Melusina Margaret Carranza Dávila- Espe’s mom, and the sun that the local high society seems to revolve around. She enjoys organizing parties for her friends (which include over half of Palizada and a tenth of the rest of the nation’s magic population, apparently). She’s very supportive of her daughter’s literary aspirations, and would show her poems off to anyone who’d listen if Espe let her.
Larissa Torres Navarrete- One of her aunts on his father’s side, Larissa has settled down in with a nice pureblood man, though Uncle Gonzalo is more often than not away wrangling dragons somewhere in Europe (he sends postcards though), so Aunt Lari spends more time having tea at their house than at her own. This also means her children are often around.
Dayana Lucero del Valle Torres- Espe’s cousin, a bouncy girl who loves dragons and Quidditch. Because she’s the closest in age to Espe, they hung out every day, and see each other as practically sisters. Was sorted into Peku at Coyopamienzo, and played in her house team as a Beater.
Jacobo Ismael del Valle Torres- Espe’s older cousin, he’s on his last year at Coyopamienzo, where he was sorted into Puch. He’s a bit stuck up, but he likes reading so Espe always comes to him to chat about books.
Leandro del Valle Torres- A small baby who screams a lot. Espe has enjoyed spending time with him over the last school break, which was when he popped into existence.
Honorio Carranza del Castillo- Espe’s grandfather on her mother’s side and the mayor of Palizada. He’s a mostly stereotypical if harmless pureblood who values the family name a bit too much. He’s technically the owner of Espe’s house, and lives there too (it’s a pretty big house).
Morgana Carranza Dávila- Her aunt on her mother’s side, Morgana is one of the local Healers, and is constantly busy working. When it’s not her shift, however, she usually crashes at the Carranza household and has tea with her sister and sister-in-law.
César Salazar Bosco- Morgana’s husband, and a consultant Charms master and private tutor. He taught everything he could to Espe, and is responsible for her talent at it. He’s not busy very often, so he hangs out at the Carranza household often.
Viviana & Titania Salazar Carranza- The twin daughters of Aunt Morgana, they’re about 21 years old now. Viviana is working under Uncle Gonzalo now, and Titania is looking into getting a job at the Secretariat of Magic. They don’t usually hang out a lot with Espe, but they get along well.
Sole- The Carranza household’s house elf. She’s a very well behaved and enjoys serving the family. She’s esentially considered part of the family (though she’s still not treated quite equally). Espe grew up with her cooking and loves her dearly, almost like a grandmother.
A whole bunch of other family members- Honorio and Melusina will invite the whole extended family over every holiday. Espe may not be able to name all of them under pressure, but on the upside, she grew up surrounded by cousins and friends.
HISTORY:
No-Majs would never suspect it, but a good chunk of the so called "Pueblos Mágicos" the mexican government won't stop advertising are, in fact, exactly what it says on the tin: magical towns, doors to the wizarding world hidden in small forgotten shops on its edges, or in specific tiles of intricately beautiful murals. It was a strike of genius to turn the front of these places, with an air filled with wonder and enchantment No-Majs can never quite put a name to, into tourist attractions. Some are just particularly pretty normal towns, though.
In one of these magical towns- specifically in Palizada, Campeche- there’s a lovely and colorful house with a traditionally tiled roof, and inside that house lives one of the most notable Pureblood families of the region: the Torres Carranza.
The Navarretes are technically a mixed blood family, sure, but Augusto’s mother married a pureblood, and he and his sisters Carina and Larissa have been living around the elite for long enough they’re basically honorary purebloods; and his marriage to Melusina Carranza, one of the daughters of the pureblood mayor of the town of Palizada, cemented it. (The Carranzas swear they’re the distant descendants of the faeries; it seems like a tall tale, and likely is, but seeing their graceful movements almost flutter makes one think twice.)
When she was a kid, Esperanza loved running up and down the river, splashing her cousins and getting splashed back. She loved sitting warm on the floor back home, listening to her dad telling her a story or watching Uncle César weave magic around her. She had a pretty idyllic childhood, all things considered: and why shouldn’t she, her mother questioned, if she was a child from the most important family in the state?
After learning how to read, she started devouring book after book, first children’s fairytales and then fun adventure novels and then she found a poetry book for the first time. She was so mesmerized by the beauty of the words put together in such a perfect way that she immediately assumed it had to be some advanced form of magic. When Uncle César, laughing, told her it wasn’t magic, and that she could do it herself if she wanted to, she didn’t believe him, but she tried anyways.
Her first poem wasn’t particularly good or original- it was something childish about her family, but her mother cherished it and treated it like the ultimate masterpiece of literature (and tried to show it off to anyone who would listen, much to Espe’s embarrassment years down the line).
Once they were old enough, Espe and Dayana were sent to the wizarding boarding school of Coyopamienzo, where Espe was sorted into the house of Puch. Being away from home was a strange experience for her, because for the first time in a long time, she wasn’t around people she’d known her whole life. She didn’t know how to approach people: so she started trying.
Her first friend outside of home, a girl in her same house who liked flowers and didn’t like the color pink, stopped talking to her after Espe said the wrong thing at the wrong time. From there onwards, she was more careful about how she talked to other people.
One year during summer break, after her third year at Coyopamienzo, her mother walked into the kitchen and happily announced her daughter had been accepted into Gooseberry.
“I sent the school some poems you’ve shared with me” she said, ignoring Espe’s horrified expression “and they said they’d love to have you there! Of course, it helped that I wrote all the million other reasons why my lovely genius angel deserves the highest quality of education…”
Despite her initial shock, Espe quickly warmed up to the idea of attending Gooseberry: attending a school in a whole new country was exciting, and the idea of higher-level literature and charms classing was very appealing. So that was the year she began attending Gooseberry High.
The classes didn’t disappoint (though she was struggling a bit with Potions), and the higher portion of time spent outdoors was pleasant and reminded her of her childhood. All in all, Espe was thoroughly enchanted with this new environment, even if she still struggled with the same problems she always did, and now didn’t even have her cousins to rely on anymore.
After the events at the end of last year (which she admittedly doesn’t know too many details about), Esperanza has become more interested in the whole “there’s haunted places here, maybe” thing; and while for now she’s been too busy with her schoolwork and writing to do anything about it, she’s totally up for dumb excursions into places she shouldn’t be in the middle of the night, against all self preservation instincts… maybe, if she ever feels like it, one day. She’s not in any rush.
SCHOOL
YEAR: Sophomore
HOUSE: Ebonhide.
SORTING: Coppertale’s fox pointed out her brash behavior and sharp tongue, which only put her off the house, as those are complete accidents which she hates about herself; and Azurecrest’s bluejay promised her a way to make friends, but she’d rather not have to change herself to make them. The offer of a calm and peaceful environment the Ribbonfin trout offered nearly won her over, but in the end it was Ebonhide’s appeal to her love and passion for all she did that resonated with her.
WAND: 25 cms, bloodwood, dtundtuncan feather core. Both are fairly exotic (and fairly expensive) regional materials, but the Carranzas have owned bloodwood wands with either dtundtuncan feather or balam fur cores for generations, and take pride in it.
FAMILIAR: A barred owl named Grace who she got as a farewell gift from her parents when she left for Gooseberry.
CLASSES:
Core: Charms, Hermeticism, History of Magic, Outdoor Education, Potions, Transfiguration
Electives: Magizoology, Wizard Literature
SENIOR PROJECT: Something with her writing. She’ll burn that bridge when she gets to it.
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: She loves Charms and Transfiguration and works hard at Hermeticism, and she finds History of Magic super interesting, but she’s struggling a bit with Potions and she’s not sure how she feels about Outdoors Education- on one hand it’s fun, but it’s also super hard and tiring…
Magizoology she’s mostly taking because it’s a class she finds interesting (and because of the cool stuff she gets to share with Dayana about it), but Wizard Literature is where she’s most evidently passionate, actively participating in class and making efforts to get as much out of the class as possible.
EXTRACURRICULARS:
Gaming Club: She enjoys traditional card games, though she doesn’t excel at them. She also finds no-maj videogames fascinating.
